Attendance

Attendance at school

Good attendance is vital and all studies show good attendance at school has a positive impact on a child's future. But attendance is important for more than just attainment:  Regular school attendance can facilitate positive peer relationships, which is a protective factor for mental health and wellbeing.

Mrs Curtis is the attendance champion - please get in touch if you have any questions.

Persistent Absence

Attendance below 90%- Persistent absence Persistent absence is defined as missing 10% or more of scheduled school time within an academic year. This equates to about 19 days of missed schooling—a substantial gap that can negatively impact both academic success and social development.

The link between attendance and attainment is clear:

• In 2020/21, just 40% of persistently absent (PA) children in KS2 achieved expected KS2 standards, compared with 84% of pupils who regularly attended school.

• 36% of PA children in KS4 got 9 to 4 in their English and maths GCSEs, compared with 84% of regular attenders.

Lateness

If a child arrives after the close of registration, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence. Our school policy states that 10 late sessions may lead to a penalty fine being issued.

Please ensure your child arrives at school on time every day! They miss morning learning, registration and ordering lunch/ toast, disrupt the class and, importantly, it is an unsettled start for them.

Holidays in term time

Holidays in term time cannot be authorised. If ten sessions are missed in a ten-week period due to a term-time holiday, the LA will be contacted to issue a penalty fine. More information about this can be found in our attendance policy.

Communication around attendance

Attendance is carefully monitored in school. We keep parents regularly updated about attendance rates at the end of each term through our school reports. If, between times, we have any concerns, we will make contact with parents/ guardians and offer support.
